Connect the letters.  Make a word.  Bookworm makes thinking about words fun.

The interface of the game is simple.  Scrabble like letter tiles fill the game grid.  You select letter titles with a click of your mouse.  You may only use adjoining letter tiles to create new words and earn points.  Word scores are based on a combination of: word length, use of challenging letters such as “y,” the game level you are on, and the number and type of reward tiles you have managed to incorporate into your word.

Speaking of reward titles – they abound in Bookworm.  Green tiles appear randomly.  Gold tiles, pop-up when you create five letter words or longer.  The longer you play the game, the more variety in tiles you will see. Sapphire tiles appear for every word you spell using  6 or 7 letters. But by far the most difficult challenge is getting diamond tiles. They appear for every 8 or 9 letter word that you spell. Both these types of tiles increase your word length multiplier.

Bookworm has two modes: “classic” and “action.”

In “classic-mode” play is turn-based and you can take as long as you like crafting new words.

In “action-mode” the stakes are higher and you are racing against time…and flaming tiles!  If you rely on too many short words burning/flaming tiles begin to appear and quickly migrate down your play page.  If they reach the bottom of your page before you spell with them, they will burn your entire letter library, ending your game.

A few tips for new players. The game starts off pretty easy and gradually gets harder as you progress to higher levels.  If you're stuck, try clicking on the LEX (the bookworm) to scramble a new set of letter tiles.  Also, you can score extra points by getting the bonus word at the end of the level. In Action mode, try to use longer words to prevent the initial onslaught of flaming titles, but, that said, if your page grid is ablaze with burning tiles, do whatever is necessary, including spelling shorter words, to stay alive.

For those of you who eat, breathe and sleep with your dictionary -- you will find Bookworm particularly addicting.  I quickly became obsessed with repeatedly beating my best score.  Bookworm is a must try for word lovers everywhere.
